The US Copyright Office is accepting petitions for exceptions to the general prohibition on evading technological measures that control access to copyrighted works, such as encryption or password-protected services intended for paying customers.
Circumventing access controls put in place by copyright owners—such as authentication codes for video games to prevent use of pirated copies—is prohibited under the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Selling devices or services designed to elude these protection measures is also barred.
