Copyright Office Starts Rulemaking on New AI, Repair Exemptions

The US Copyright Office advanced proposed exemptions to a ban on circumventing digital security measures protecting copyrighted works, including one that would allow researchers to access generative AI models to examine possible bias.

The office requested comments on seven proposed new or expanded exemptions, including access to generative AI models for bias research, “anticompetitive” repair restrictions to consumer devices, and the preservation of video games. It also intends to recommend 38 existing exemptions for renewal, according to a Federal Register notice scheduled to publish on Thursday.
