The U.S. Copyright Office has issued new regulations to strengthen consumers’ rights to repair software-enabled devices like video game consoles and medical devices.
The office’s final rule published in Thursday’s Federal Register expands the list of devices that are exempt from Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits the circumvention of technological protection measures, to cover software-enabled devices. The office reexamines and determines exceptions to Section 1201 every three years.
