Copyright Office AI Reports on Training, Outputs Delayed to 2025

The US Copyright Office’s reports on the copyrightability of generative AI outputs and liability for using protected works to train models without permission won’t be published until next year, the office’s director told lawmakers.

The office aims to complete the copyrightability section soon after the New Year holiday, and the training section in the first quarter of 2025, Director Shira Perlmutter said in a Monday letter to the chairs and ranking members of the Senate Subcommittee on Intellectual Property and House Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet.
