The Copyright Royalty Board has locked in new, higher rates for digital music streamers such as Spotify, Apple Inc., Amazon.com, and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, along with a new way to determine how much they pay songwriters.
The final determination, announced by the U.S. Copyright Office Nov. 20, confirmed rates initially set in January that will be in effect through 2022.
The new rates represent a substantial pay raise for artists over the coming five years, although they did not secure the per-stream rate they sought.
