Converse Sues Steve Madden Over Patented Sneaker Design

Converse Inc. accused Steven Madden Ltd. in Massachusetts federal court of infringing its design patents by copying its Run Star Hike sneakers.

The Friday complaint asserted that Steve Madden “often copies others” in making its shoes. Steve Madden has also been involved in legal disputes with Yves Saint Laurent, Rothy’s Inc., and Ugg maker Deckers Outdoor Corp. over shoe designs.

Converse said Steve Madden began selling its infringing Madden Girl Winnona Flatform High-Top sneakers in March. The complaint included pictures that allegedly show the Madden shoes infringe two Converse design patents by using “substantially the same” design.
