The Commerce Department is trying to ferret out trademark scammers by registering marks for the very agency that handles them.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s parent agency applied Wednesday to register USPTO trademarks to itself, part of a wider effort to combat fraud.
The move is designed to help the government pursue legal action when scammers falsely claim to be or be affiliated with the USPTO, a blog post by Commissioner for Trademarks David Gooder said.
The post said the office recognizes “the intrigue and irony of filing for federal registration of USPTO marks ... with the USPTO.”
