China Announces Generative AI Labeling to Cull Disinformation

China joined the EU and US in rolling out new regulation to control disinformation by requiring labeling of synthetic content online.

The Cyberspace Administration of China together with three other agencies on Friday announced a new set of rules that will require service providers to label AI-generated material as such, either explicitly or via metadata encoded in each file. Those rules come into effect on Sept. 1.
