Roles with “chief” in their titles often come and go in the corporate world, seeing their tenures end as fads evolve.
Chief community relations officers, for example, became prized roles in the 1970s that faded by the early 2000s. Chief knowledge officers were born in the 1990s before dissolving in a decade. Even the role of the chief digital officer has come and gone.
In the last two decades, chief privacy officers came into vogue—first to deal with unregulated data privacy challenges, then with emerging rules including the European Union’s flagship standard.
