Chewy Beats IBM’s Infringement Claims Over Internet Patents

Online pet-supply seller Chewy Inc. won a ruling ending its legal fight with IBM Corp. over internet-related patents—technology IBM tried to license to it for $36 million.

Judge Jed Rakoff in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled Chewy doesn’t infringe three IBM patents. Part of a fourth patent is invalid because it covers only the abstract idea of identifying ads based on search results, Rakoff said in an opinion Monday.
