The Patent Trial and Appeal Board said that some challenged claims of Miracor Medical SA’s patent that relates to a heart assist pump device with a magneto coupling system are unpatentable as obvious over prior art, in an inter partes review by Abbott Laboratories. The board said that some challenged claims are obvious over various combinations of prior art, including prior art titled “HeartMate III: Pump Design for a Centrifugal LVAD with a Magnetically Levitated Rotor,” and “Development of Terumo Implantable Left Ventricular
