Challenged claims of Lancium LLC’s patent that relates to flexible datacenters using behind-the-meter power input systems are unpatentable as obvious over prior art, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board said, in an inter partes review by Cholla Energy LLC and OBM Inc. The board determined that the challenged claims are obvious over various combinations of prior art, including an IEEE Communications Magazine article entitled “On the Fundamental Energy Trade-offs of Geographical Load Balancing,” that discloses datacenters located at a power generation source, and that discloses intelligent local circuit devices that control power delivered to an electrical device via a circuit. ...
