The Federal Circuit reversed and remanded the decision of a federal district court in Michigan denying Opti-Luxx Inc.'s motion for judgment as a matter of law and issuing a permanent injunction in Smartrend Manufacturing Group Inc.'s action for infringement of two patents. With respect to one patent, the appeals court determined that the district court erred in its construction of a claim term and a new trial is necessary, and with respect to the other patent, concluded that JMOL should have been granted because no reasonable jury could have found infringement under the doctrine of equivalents.
