The Federal Circuit affirmed the decision of a federal district court in California granting Niantic Inc.'s motions for judgment on the pleadings and summary judgment of invalidity of claims of NantWorks LLC and Nant Holdings IP LLC’s patents that pertain to augmented-reality devices or systems. The appeals court determined that the patent claims are directed to the abstract ideas of providing information based on a location on a map and receiving information about a location and displaying materials based on that information, and don’t contain an inventive concept.
