The Federal Circuit affirmed the decision of a federal district court in California granting Polycom Inc.'s motion for judgment on the pleadings on directPacket Research Inc.'s action for infringement of a patent that teaches a system and method for multimedia communication that employs an intermediate communication protocol to achieve interoperability between incompatible multimedia systems. The appeals court said that the patent is directed to the abstract idea of language translation and presents no inventive concept.
