The Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit reversed and remanded a federal district court’s jurisdictional dismissal of UMG Recordings Inc.'s copyright infringement action against a Russian owner/operator of websites with free stream ripping services. The court found (1) that the owner/operator’s contacts with Virginia are quantitatively and qualitatively sufficient to demonstrate that he purposefully availed himself of the privilege of conducting business here and (2) that UMG’s copyright infringement claims arise out of the owner/operator’s activities directed at Virginia, in that he made two globally accessible websites that Virginia visitors used for alleged music piracy, knowing his sites were ...
