Canada’s Top Court Takes Aim at Copyright Trolls

Canada’s top court struck a potentially major blow against copyright trolls by making them responsible for at least part of the cost of uncovering copyright infringers.

But the full impact of the ruling won’t be clear until a lower court sets the level of costs, intellectual property lawyers told Bloomberg Law.

The Supreme Court of Canada said U.S. film producer Voltage Pictures LLC must pay “reasonable” costs to Rogers Communications Inc., a Canadian media company, to find subscribers who allegedly downloaded Voltage movies such as “American Heist” and “The Cobbler.”
