California lawmakers are advancing a number of bills that would curb social media’s negative effects on children, echoing calls from President Joe Biden and other leaders.

The Golden State is not alone in its efforts to rein in the platforms, as Congress and other states have proposed or even enacted laws limiting social media use over the past year. The breadth and scope of the legislative activity in Silicon Valley’s home state has attracted intense lobbying on both sides of the debate.
