Bristol-Myers Unit Sues Jiangsu Hengrui to Block Abraxane Copies

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.’s Abraxis BioScience filed a lawsuit alleging that a generic version of Abraxane proposed by Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals Co. infringes a patent for the drug, used for certain hard-to-treat cancers.

Abraxis, a unit of Bristol-Myers’ Celgene Corp., filed the complaint Wednesday in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey.

The patent, which Bloomberg Law estimates will expire in March 2024, covers pharmaceutical compositions and methods of use and administration of paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injection. Paclitaxel is a chemotherapy drug that slows or stops the growth of cancer cells.
