Brewer Rips Heineken Unit La Tropical’s ‘Cristal’ Trademark Suit

A Heineken unit’s baseless trademark and copyright suit represents an attempt to stymie competition by asserting intellectual property rights that don’t belong to it, a California brewer said in Florida federal court.

Soltura LLC, which sells Cerveza Palma, panned a complaint from Cerveceria La Tropical for its “irrelevant” history and “intermittent and unsuccessful” efforts to “establish a revamped brand of the Cuban beer Cristal” in the US, according to its motion to dismiss filed Wednesday in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
