BGOV Bill Analysis: S. 3998, Make Temporary Judgeships Permanent

The 10 remaining temporary federal judgeships in US district courts would be converted to permanent seats under S. 3998.

The bill would apply to the following temporary positions:

• Northern District of Alabama
• District of Arizona
• Central District of California
• Southern District of Florida
• District of Hawaii
• District of Kansas
• Eastern District of Missouri
• District of New Mexico
• Western District of North Carolina
• Eastern District of Texas

Their temporary judgeship status has been extended several times, most recently in the second fiscal 2024 spending package (Public Law 118-47). The measure would authorize “such sums as may be necessary” ...
