Author Wendell Berry and his wife Tanya sued the University of Kentucky on Tuesday, seeking to block it from removing a mural with allegedly racist imagery or a 2018 work that responds to it.
The complaint says that Tanya Berry is the niece and oldest living heir of Ann Rice O’Hanlon, who painted the mural in UK’s Memorial Hall in 1934. The mural depicts the history of central Kentucky and includes, among other things, a scene of Black people working in a tobacco field with a train that appears to be moving over their hunched backs.
