Artist Fights for Copyright for AI-Assisted Graphic Novel (Correct)

Artist Kris Kashtanova is pushing back on the Copyright Office’s threat to revoke a copyright registration for her graphic novel “Zarya of the Dawn,” created with AI art program Midjourney.

In a letter to the office, an attorney for Kashtanova—who uses she and they pronouns—argues that Midjourney was simply an “assisting instrument” in the artist’s creation of their graphic novel, and “every element of the Work reflects Kashtanova’s authorship.” The letter, dated Nov. 21, was made public Thursday on Twitter by another lawyer working with Kashtanova.
