Apple’s Failure to Take 5G-Standard License Prompts Patent Suit

A holding company linked to patent-assertion firm IPValue alleges that Apple Inc. breached its obligation to negotiate a fair license for standard-essential 5G technology used in a range of iPhones and iPads.

The Apple devices infringe Dallas-based 5G IP Holdings LLC’s patents, US Patent Nos. 10,624,150; 10,813,163; and 10,531,385, according to a complaint filed Friday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The patents—which Bloomberg Law estimates will respectively expire in March, September, and August 2038—originally were assigned to FG Innovation Co., the suit says. FG declared them “essential to the 5G standard” ...
