Apple, Visa Escape High Court Review of Patent Infringement Win

The US Supreme Court won’t review whether the Federal Circuit went against high court precedent by requiring specificity for an invention to be considered eligible for a patent.

Apple Inc. and Visa Inc. last August beat a patent infringement suit filed by Universal Secure Registry LLC, when the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit found that USR’s inventions related to online payment technology were abstract.

“In cases involving authentication technology, patent eligibility often turns on whether the claims provide sufficient specificity to constitute an improvement to computer functionality itself,” the Federal Circuit said.
