Apple Loses Bid for Haptic’s Litigation-Funding Records in Suit

A federal judge rejected Apple Inc.‘s effort to force Haptic Inc. to turn over communications with its litigation funder in a patent suit over an iPhone shortcut feature, ruling the documents are protected work product and disclosure didn’t waive privilege.

Haptic disclosed the documents under confidentiality agreements and shared them to support its lawsuit against Apple, not with potential adversaries, Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley said in an order issued Tuesday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. She denied Apple’s motion to compel and granted Haptic’s and its funder’s motion to quash.
