Apple Faces University Lawsuit Over WiFi Patent Royalties

The University of New Mexico’s patent licensing arm is accusing Apple Inc. of infringing WiFi technology patents with its iPhone, iPad and other devices.

STC.UNM July 19 alleged that 31 Apple products, including versions of the MacBook and Apple TV, infringe three WiFi patents that are part a wireless internet industry standard.

The lawsuit highlights the trend of universities filing infringement suits and battling it out in courtrooms in a bid win damages from technology companies.
