A potential ban on imports of Apple Watches that detect irregular heartbeats may turn on whether Apple Inc. improperly kept evidence from an administrative tribunal that reviewed and invalidated patents belonging to medical device-maker AliveCor Inc.

Apple and AliveCor—which have headquarters within 10 miles of each other in Northern California—presented competing narratives to the Federal Circuit Friday in twin appeals over the validity of AliveCor’s patents, whether they’d been infringed by Apple, and whether the tech giant copied an AliveCor watch band with heartbeat detection capabilities to develop features for its later model watches.
