Amazon Wins $7 Million for Work-at-Home Telemarketing Scheme

Amazon.com Inc. is entitled to default judgment and $7 million in its lawsuit alleging its brand was misused in a telemarketing scheme to swindle job seekers into buying unaffiliated website services, a federal court in Washington said.

Amazon alleged that an Illinois marketing company used prerecorded phone messages that falsely claimed to be recruiting for work-at-home opportunities with the retail giant. The messages allegedly included domains that unlawfully used the company’s brand, like amazonprofits.org and amazonwealth.org, but redirected the victims to domains controlled by another marketing network.
