Alcon to Pay J&J $199 Million to Settle Eye-Laser Tech Case (1)

Alcon Inc. will pay Johnson & Johnson $199 million as part of a settlement over technology for using lasers in cataract surgery, resolving a dispute that might have exposed $3.7 billion of Alcon’s profits to a jury’s disgorgement.

Alcon and Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision Inc. also “have exchanged cross-licenses of certain intellectual property and other mutually agreed covenants and releases,” ending what Alcon in a statement issued Sunday called “various worldwide intellectual property disputes relating to this matter.”

A spokesperson for J&J on Monday confirmed the deal and echoed the language of Alcon’s statement.
