AI-Created Work Isn’t Protectable, Copyright Office Tells Judge

Artificial intelligence systems that create new works aren’t eligible for copyright protection, the US Copyright Office told a federal court.

Shira Perlmutter, director of the Copyright Office, defended the office’s decision to reject computer scientist Stephen Thaler’s application to register the two-dimensional artwork titled “A Recent Entrance to Paradise” that was made by his AI system known as the “Creativity Machine,” because it wasn’t created by a human.
