The US Copyright Office granted a limited copyright registration for a comic book created with the help of artificial intelligence, potentially opening the door for artists seeking to protect their AI-assisted works.
Artist Kris Kashtanova used Midjourney’s AI-powered text-to-image generator to create images for their comic book, “Zarya of the Dawn.”
Kashtanova is entitled to a copyright registration of only the comic’s text and the whole work, but not the individual AI-generated images, the Copyright Office said in a Tuesday letter it provided to Bloomberg Law.
