Art, music, and other works created using artificial intelligence may be eligible for copyright registration, provided that there is sufficient human authorship, the US Copyright Office said in its first-ever formal guidance on the issue.

The advent of AI in creative works has roiled courts and agencies charged with overseeing intellectual property protections around the world. Even as some argue that AI should be treated as the legal author or inventor of new creations, others say that AI programs inherently remix other works without attribution, permission, or payment to the original creators.
