Judge Approves $32 Million Cut to Window Shade Patent Verdict

A federal judge in New York awarded $2.67 million to a South Carolina maker of minimalist window shades, in place of a jury’s $34.6 million verdict the judge called “outlandish.”

Geigtech East Bay LLC, which does business as J Geiger, won the $34.6 million verdict against Lutron Electronics Co. for infringement of its US Patent No. 10,294,717, in March. Four months later District Judge Colleen McMahon wiped out the verdict, calling the amount “far beyond any number that is supported by the evidence introduced at trial” and far in excess of the $3.8 million Geigtech sought at trial.
