White House Adviser Yared Defends Hassett Criticism of Fed Study

A senior economic adviser to President Donald Trump defended White House criticism of new research from the Federal Reserve on tariffs, rejecting the notion it represented an attack on the central bank’s independence.

“Having criticisms of a study by researchers of the Fed is not an attack on Fed independence,” Pierre Yared, the acting chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said Thursday on Bloomberg Television.

“I think looking at comments over specific studies and claiming this is an attack on Fed independence is a little bit hyperbolic,” he said.
