The relationship between Canada and India had been strained since the Trudeau government accused New Delhi’s diplomats of backing violence and harassment against Sikh separatists living in the North American country. The dispute led to tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomatic officials.

But a detente appears to have been reached after a near two-year standoff. The improvement in bilateral relations comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney is now in charge in Canada, and as both nations look to blunt the impact of US tariffs.
