UK Steel Sector Warns of Crisis as Starmer Vows EU Tariff Talks

The UK’s steel sector warned of a potentially existential crisis after the European Union proposed raising tariffs to shield its own ailing sector.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, on Tuesday proposed 50% tariffs on steel imports above a much-reduced quota, threatening to choke off access for Britain’s steelmakers to their main export market and leave Britain exposed to a flood of imports that would otherwise go to Europe. The move comes on top of 25% tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump for UK steel exports to the US.
