Spain’s Cuerpo Defends Relations With China Despite Rift With US

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo defended his country’s outreach to China in the face of increasing tensions between Washington and Beijing, arguing that Europe needs to be a key player in a new global order.

“The relationship between the EU and China is resetting,” Cuerpo said on Bloomberg TV in Washington, where he’s attending a International Monetary Fund summit. “China is a rival and a competitor in many areas, but has to be an ally and a strategic partner going forward. Spain is part of that, but it’s an EU approach.”
