Singapore PM Faces First Election With Rookies, Fewer Veterans

Singapore’s nine-day election campaign, one of the world’s shortest, kicks off on Wednesday as Prime Minister Lawrence Wong seeks to extend the People’s Action Party’s unbroken 60-year rule.

It’s the first time since 2011 where not all districts are contested. The opposition is vying for 92 out of a total of 97 seats in the May 3 election.

Wong, 52, is fielding a record 32 new candidates, in his first electoral test since taking the top job last May. He has pledged leadership renewal as he navigates what he calls a “turbulent world.”
