NATO Chief Says Allies Are Informally Discussing Hormuz Mission

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said allies are unofficially talking about a potential role for the military alliance in the Strait of Hormuz, as economic anxieties mount over the blocked waterway.

“These are informal discussions but, hey, the situation is dynamic,” Rutte told reporters in Brussels on Wednesday, adding he was always thinking of “whether NATO can play a positive role.”

The remarks reflect the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s evolving stance on the strait, a vital route for fuel shipments that Iran has kept closed since US-Israeli attacks on the country began in late February.
