Mexico Removes Thousands of Regulations, To Streamline System, Spur Competition

MEXICO CITY—Mexico’s president announced Aug. 9 that his government has eliminated more than 12,000 federal regulatory procedures, decrees and standards in efforts to boost competition.

President Felipe Calderon said he will continue a massive overhaul of the regulatory system, giving federal institutions of the executive branch until Sept. 10 to report essential regulations and purge all of those that don’t make the list. Calderon’s goal is to remove by year end 14,000 of 34,500 federal procedures, which he says have contributed to an excessively bureaucratic system.
