Illegal Dark-Fleet Tanker Activities Need to Stop, IMO Says

The international watchdog that oversees shipping said the illegal activities of a burgeoning shadow fleet of oil tankers present a “grave concern” for environmental safety, and called for a global clampdown.

Western sanctions on Russia have caused hundreds of aging tankers to move into the hands of anonymous shipping companies, often using substandard insurance. Some of the ships are giving fake locations to the industry’s digital tracking systems to hide their activity.
