The largest agricultural lobbying group in the US is urging the Agriculture Department to oppose Mexico’s proposed ban on genetically modified corn imports.
The American Farm Bureau Federation, a conservative-leaning lobbying organization with significant pull in agriculture policy, included the ban among its top issues for 2023. US corn farmers have become increasingly concerned about Mexico’s plans, and American agencies have already pressed Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to drop the planned stoppage, arguing that GMO opposition isn’t based in science. Talks have continued without an agreement.
