Nestled strategically at the point where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden, the tiny country of Djibouti has never felt more conveniently placed than now.

As a direct consequence of the Houthis’ violent campaign against commercial ships in the region, the former French colony of a million people is playing an outsized role in a highly turbulent region. Some call it the “eye of the cyclone” with violence rife in neighboring Somalia and Ethiopia, and Eritrea still deemed to be a pariah state to the north.
