Carney Sets Goal of Doubling Canada’s Non-US Exports by 2035 (1)

Oct. 23, 2025, 12:30 AM UTC

Prime Minister Mark Carney laid out a strategy to double Canada’s exports to markets outside the US within a decade to net an extra C$300 billion ($214 billion) in trade.

The former central banker announced that target in a rare prime-time televised speech on Wednesday evening, ahead of a federal budget to be released on Nov. 4. Carney won Canada’s election in April after promising to reform the economy to make it less reliant on the US, the world’s largest economy, which currently buys about 75% of Canadian exports but has imposed punishing tariffs under President Donald Trump.
