A downside of Donald Trump’s threats to tariff, attack or take over other countries is that it can be hard for him to make friends with fellow world leaders. One politician he did genuinely bond with was Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s president during Trump’s first term in the White House.

The two men have a lot in common. Both are hard-right populists who’ve denounced protections for LGBTQ people, slashed funding for universities and rolled back environmental regulations.
