Union Pacific Said to Have Lost Customer APL to Buffett’s BNSF

Union Pacific Corp., the largest publicly traded railroad, lost a contract to haul the international containerized freight of APL, a unit of the maritime shipping company CMA CGM SA, to its rival BNSF Railway Co., according to a source familiar with the deal.

Union Pacific said on its earnings conference call Thursday that it lost a major international intermodal customer, but declined to name the customer or give a magnitude of the sales hit. Intermodal is freight moved in shipping containers that can be hauled by ship, rail and truck.
