Tropical Storm Gabrielle Forms in Atlantic to Break Dry Spell

Tropical Storm Gabrielle has formed well to the east of the Caribbean islands after the Atlantic has been unusually quiet for weeks.

Gabrielle’s top winds reached 45 miles (72 kilometers) per hour, as it churned about 1,085 miles east of the Caribbean’s northern Leeward Islands, the US National Hurricane Center said in an advisory at 11 a.m. New York time. The storm was moving north-northwest and will likely become a hurricane in about four days as it traces a path through the open Atlantic far from land.
