New Wildfire Burns South of San Diego as Forecast Points to Rain

Firefighters are racing to contain a fast-growing brush fire in San Diego County, while other blazes continue to burn throughout the region as Southern California inches closer to its first significant rainfall in more than nine months.

The Border 2 fire is 10% contained near the Otay Mesa border crossing into Mexico. The blaze grew to 4,250 acres (1,720 hectares) overnight into Friday morning, forcing evacuations and threatening a radio repeater tower that fire officials described as “critical” for communications.
