Michigan Football Ex-Coach’s Data Hack Spurs Cyber Insurance Row

A Pennsylvania software vendor is suing its cyber insurer seeking coverage for lawsuits alleging the company operated an electronic medical record system through which a former assistant coach for the University of Michigan’s football team downloaded data on more than 150,000 athletes.

Spinnaker Insurance Co. and third-party administrator Cowbell Cyber Inc. breached cyber policies by refusing to cover Keffer Development Services LLC’s costs in 11 underlying lawsuits, the software company said in a complaint filed Tuesday in the US District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
